2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft
Analysis of the first round of the 2020 MLB draft
Today we would talk about the MLB 2020 draft because that is coming up and it is happening but is gonna be different than any other draft and also want to go through 10 of the top players according to MLB.com just so we can get acquainted with some of the guys that are going to get drafted coming up next month so first of all what's going to be different about this year's draft it will be done it remotely there is not going to be a bunch of draft rooms and much you guys get together this time it's going to be all done remotely more than likely unless that changes that's the current plan but it's also going to be heavily shortened I wasn't really necessary other than the fact that they haven't seen enough guys play this year at all high schools cut short college was cut short so decisions are tougher so maybe that's why but as far as that you're doing it remotely I don't see why you couldn't draft maybe even if you want it because you know you're not getting together to do it so but anyway it's going to be shortened never the less so that's going to have a huge effect on a lot of players who thought they were going to get drafted.
It's taking place June 10 and June 11 and it will be on MLB network and I will try to do some kind of live stream at least June 10 or have a video about it going to do something about it though because definitely want to cover that draft especially June 10 because that's when it's going to be the first round the first 37 guys will go June 10 and then the rest 100 23 remaining will go the following day so it's going to be really interesting in the San Francisco Giants have the thirteenth pick this year's I can't wait to see who that's going to be normally you have to sign your pics by July 10 your draft and then you got to have them signed officially by July 10 this year they're going to let them wait until at least August 1 to get that done before they lose their guy and the reason for that is probably because they want to give them more time to be able to do the physicals and everything like that because it's tough to travel and there's all these you know things going on right now so it's tough to get everything done you need to get done to figure out if you're really going to sign this guy or not and if the guy wants to sign with the team or he wants to go back and play another year of college or if he wants to go to college if he's a high school picks so we're gonna have more time to sign their draft picks but even though the drive to shore you can still sign undrafted free agents for up to $20000.
So there's somebody you didn't get that wasn't drafted and you're like the man we would love to have this guy in our system mon you can sign him and that's a pretty cool thing right there so we'll see if the giants or any other teams decided over that inside the guys who would normally be drafted who didn't get drafted signed them and maybe they become somebody is maybe we're gonna have some superstars in the future they weren't even drafted because of this weird situation I think it's very possible but I decided for this video we're gonna just go in touch upon some of these players just real quick run through the top 10 according to MLB.com this is not my list this is MLB's list of the top 10 prospects in the draft so let's run through these guys.
I'll give my quick thought starting in over 10 has Dana Jr stat of Arkansas I'm saying that right probably not he's 63 205 pounds haven't seen him play too much a very powerful guy thought done some research on him he was drafted by the mariners and 17 didn't sign went to become an. Arkansas razorback he has 37 career bombs in just 500 95 at-bats strikeout rates a little bit high but it's not terrible before 2020 was canceled yet OPS of 1000 300 for this year with a 448 batting average he is an average fielder he's got a good arm but he's ever-improving on every aspect of his game is getting better this guy could turn out to be a really good player.
At number 9 in Max Meyer out of Minnesota 6 put on 85 pounds right-handed pitcher he's been moving up that draft ladder very quickly lately he's got a nasty slider he can hit 98 plus with his fastball 0 87 strikeouts and 0 48 getting so this guy is legit he was also having his best year when things got shut down college area of 2.13 he was a closed back in 2018 became a starter for this year and he has been looking awesome, not huge is only 60 like I said he's an inch taller than Tim Lincecum teams might worry about that but expect this guy to go pretty high in the draft coming in and the rate is read Detmers out of Louisville 210 pounds left-handed pitcher this guy's not considered to have a huge upside is more like a safe bet kind of guy he's going to be a solid arm in rotation more than likely very polished very affected guy he's got 20 wins in his college career to just 6 losses 200 84 strikers on in 91 innings
So the guy can strike a lot of guys out despite the fact his fastballs in around 92 to 93 he probably has some 6 been rate he's obviously got great, and this is someone to look out for Reid Detmers next up at number 7 is Zach Wien and he is the first high school guy on the list I think the only high school guy analyst from spruce creek high school in Florida he's been moving up the draft board as well amazing athlete ton of upside 6 490 pounds and obviously you can build on that 90 pounds and really become a powerful guy smooth beautiful swing makes solid contact more than likely spend a little more time in the minors and some of these other guys because he's out of high school but still he's a 5 tool talent and expects to see Zach Veeam going pretty high. Up in that draft coming in number 6 Gary Mitchell this is an interesting 1 he was drafted by the ETS in 2017 did not sign went to UCLA and it's another great athlete amazing speed ton of potential power his swing though has been labeled as a long he only has 6 career college home runs but he 63 205 pounds got above-average defense he's got a great arm and he's really found his comfort zone the last couple years
He was hitting 355 with a 9 or 9 OPS when things shut down his home run totals like us that are not great but it's about the potential with this guy's about what he can become so I think that he might get drafted in the first round I don't think you'll be near number 6 I don't know why he's drink so high here but I definitely expected to go in the first round probably more around 131415 range are expected to go somewhere in there in a number 5 is Nick Gonzalez is out of New Mexico state he's only 510 on a 90 pounds but he's got a short swing not a long swing that a short swing it's compact he is a great pure hitter is not the best fielder but he hit 432 and 2019 and he hit 16 bombs I should mention he's got pot he had 12 and this year in only 58 at bats with a 448 batting average now maybe the altitude help that out in New Mexico or but you know what you still got hit over the fence Nickens Ollis is kind of the best of both worlds is the guy's like O. U. small contact type hitter pure hitter type up your hair type it's a bunch of home runs so there is serious potential there Nick Gonzalez I'm not saying it's going to become a 4050 home run guy in the big leagues it could become a guy who has that kind of pop where you hit your 2025 home runs so look for **** Allah's to go pretty high in the draft number for scammers in Hancock right handed pitcher out of Georgia big guy 64 to 13 he was number at 1.but he didn't have the best start to 2020 really this 4 game so keep that in mind but he's got 4 pitches all effective he's got a filthy slider hard curve part fastball could get up to triple digits very deceptive changeup and in 2019 he allowed 1 runner.
Less in 9 of his 14 starts but like I said in 2020 and a 3.75 ERA and give a 22 hits in 24 innings which is not great for a first round draft pick but still he's struck out 34 I wouldn't put too much stock into that is only 4 games I look at him to still go pretty high if you could possibly go at number 4 where he's ranked in it so he would go to the Kansas City Royals at Emerson Hancock but number 3 is probably my favorite guy in the tire draft if I had a number 1 pick I would definitely consider this guy a so Lacey out of Texas a and M. left handers 64 to 15 he's the whole package okay he's got the size he's got that he's throwing 97 plus he's got a big arsenal of pitches he's got a deceptive changeup as well aggressive style the attacks hitters he shows no fear and this year he was on an absolute tear through his 4 starts 46 strikeouts in 24 innings to just 8 walks that's 17.3 strikeouts per 9 with 8.7 ERA he's got a career 2.07 year rate 145 record by far the best pitcher in the draft and if the Tigers and Royals decide to go for a header then expect a so lazy to go number 3 to the Miami Marlins but next up at number 2 is Austin Martin I would hate him probably number 3 but they got him and number 2 is out of Vanderbilt he is a pure hitter also a great looking guy shortstop you can play 30 can play outfield 60 800 85 pounds he's not huge but he's big enough he's got speed he's got baseball instincts he's got a very strong arm basically you're 5 tool guy he's just good at everything now that doesn't always work out ask Billy Beane about that but he's still tied at all he's a mazing out there in these potentially could bulk up and become a really great power hitter
He doesn't strike out a lot and 500 43 at-bats he's only struck out 82 times he's walked more which is 85 he's got a 368 career batting average for 74 on base very safe. Austin Martin, I expect to become a really good player but I number 1 I've talked about it before and Spencer Torkelson is an absolute machine he will probably go number 1 to Detroit if not he'll go number 261220 right-handed hitters a first baseman he's got good but not a great defense but it doesn't really matter when you're hidden bombs left and right he hit 25 home runs as a freshman breaking Barry Bonds rookie home run record at Arizona state he's got 54 now in his college career in just 400 98 at-bats with at 337 batting average 598 on-base percentage 10 career walks to just 104 strikeouts when you got 54 bombs 1 of 4 strikeouts is not too bad the stats are there for this guy he looks legit he's got a great look and swing and this is just everything you want right here in Spencer Torkelson I don't see any reason why the Tigers would not snag this guy at number 1 I think you should be at number 1.
I definitely agree with that part of the ranking here so those are the 10 top guys on MLB.com just thought we'd run through get those names in our minds so that when draft day comes we kind of know some of the guys we're dealing with here a lot of these guys got great upside some of them are just very solid but they're all looking really good I like to talk about more the guys below this because more than likely the giants won't get any of these guys they might but more than likely it'll be someone else so gonna talk more about these guys and get more to the draft as we get closer to draft day thanks guys so much for checking out the video and put your thoughts down below who do you like out of these guys who have you seen play I haven't seen any of them in person to see him on TV a little here and there and done my research and that's how I know about him but I really you know you really don't know what these guys until they go to the minor league system some of them are busts some of them are going to be awesome I see at least 3 or 4 these guys becoming series big leaguers especially Torkel sent an ace at lazy as well that is probably my favorite guy in the draft and was a pitcher.
