Maintenance is the act of keeping something or a material in good condition. It is a group of activities carried out on machines,equipment and facilities to keep them in good condition by cleaning, servicing, or replacing parts regularly.
For example, a car owner is expected to maintain his/her car by washing it,checking the level of engine,gear and brake oils,checking the level of radiator water and acid in the battery, etc. He/she should also gauge (check the amount of air) in the tyres regularly.
Computers can be made to last long by installing antivirus, performing regular software updates,running computer maintenance application, backup files, keeping the keyboard crumb free, clean the screen, remove dust from vent and fans and by using a surge protector.
Television set, Radios, DVD players and other electronic gadgets can be maintained and made to last long by cleaning/removing dust regularly.

Some of the materials used for maintenance include:
>Rags for cleaning of the parts or bodies of an equipment or machine
>Brush for dusting(removing dirt from an equipment or machine)
>Oil and grease applied to the moving parts of an equipment or machines to reduce friction.
>Water, used for cooling engines (e.g, car engines which gets hot when the car is in motion),cleaning/washing an equipment/machine or its body parts.
>Tools such as screw drivers , spanners, pliers , saw , etc used to tighten, loosen, cut or join parts of an equipment/machine together.
Maintenance is important because it helps in:
- Keeping an equipment or machine in good operating condition.
- Minimize the occurrence of sudden breakdown of an equipment or machine.
- Reducing the cost of repairs after a breakdown.
- Prolonging the life of an equipment or machine
